How to Clean Outdoor Cushions and Patio Fabrics

Step 1: Read Care Labels First

Always check the care tag on your cushions before starting . Look for these codes:

  • "W": Water-based cleaners are safe

  • "S": Solvent-based cleaners only

  • "WS": Both water and solvent cleaners are allowed

  • "X": Vacuum or brush only—no water-based cleaning

Step 2: Vacuum Loose Dirt First

Step 4: Machine Washing Removable Covers

  • Close all zippers before washing 

  • Use the delicate cycle with cold water and mild laundry detergent 

  • For severe mold or mildew, add 1 cup of bleach (if fabric permits) 

  • Air dry completely—never machine dry, as heat can shrink or damage fabric

Step 5: Mold and Mildew Removal

General Fabric (Vinegar Method):

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle

  • Scrub gently, rinse thoroughly, and air dry

Step 6: Removing Specific Stains

Oil or Grease Stains:

  • Blot excess oil with a clean cloth (do not rub)

  • Apply cornstarch or baking soda to the stain and let sit 10–15 minutes

  • Scrape off powder and reapply if needed

  • Clean remaining marks with dish soap and water 

Spills and Bird Droppings:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon Borax, 1 teaspoon mild dish soap, and 1 quart warm water

  • Spray on stain, let soak a few minutes, and scrub gently

  • Rinse thoroughly and air dry on its side 

Grass Stains:

  • Make a paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda

  • Apply and let sit 30 minutes

  • Scrub, rinse, and air dry 

Tree Sap:

  • Freeze sap with an ice cube in a plastic bag, then scrape off with a blunt tool

  • Alternatively, dab with rubbing alcohol on a cloth and rinse 

Step 7: Deep Cleaning and Drying

For thorough seasonal cleaning, a deep clean before storage is recommended .

  • After cleaning, always allow cushions to dry completely before returning them to furniture or storing them. This is the single most important step for preventing mold and mildew from returning .

  • Prop cushions on their sides so air circulates on all surfaces .

  • Direct sunlight speeds drying and helps kill bacteria and mold spores .

After cushions are completely dry, consider applying a fabric protectant to help prevent future stains .
